Standard Horizon HX850S Handheld Radio and GPS Waterproof and it floats. This is the radio I own. Waypoint Marine, on Harbour Rd in Sidney, is a dealer for this radio and the PFD below.

This is the Mustang MD3183 - Deluxe Inflatable PFD with HIT (auto hydrostatic activation) which I have used extensively. Comfortable and easy to wear.

I have just received a new MD3153 HD inflatable. All the benefits of the MD3183 plus the heavy duty fabric improves puncture and abrasion resistance and is easy to clean. Other new innovations include a damage-tolerant inflator cover - no more cracked inspection windows. I will post my observations after I have a chance to use it. Our son has used this PFD two mornings on his job and his comment was "Way more comfortable".

If you are operating a small Non-Pleasure Vessel, a commercial vessel, you likely need to obtain a Transport Canada SVOP certificate

This is a three day classroom course that has been designed to instruct owners and operators of small Non-Pleasure vessels on the proper safety and operating procedures as required by Canadian law.

If you are operating a crew boat, fishing charters, sailing charters or boat tours you will need this certificate.  The deadline for passenger vessels was November 2009 and for non-passenger vessels the deadline is November 2010.

Courses are available in Victoria and Vancouver and in any location by arrangement.
